David Klausner

Man and his Dog

A frequent and popular guest leader at both TEMPO and Amherst Early Music Workshop, David is the former Director of The Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto and a superb bassoonist. At this opening workshop of the season, he will share his vast knowledge of early music to create an entertaining workout for recorders, viols, drums and buzzies.

Annual Fall Workshop

Stephanie Martin

Our annual Fall Workshop will be led this year by Stephanie Martin, an active musician and conductor in Toronto. She has just been appointed Assistant Professor at York University where she will focus on early music and choral music. For her workshop, Stephanie will explore the polychoral music of Venice as it spread throughout Europe. Singers are most welcome to join a variety of instrumentalists in this glorious repertoire.

Matthias Maute

One of Canadašs top recorder players, Matthias pursues an active career in Montreal. He enjoys playing contemporary music and is a composer of strikingly inventive music for recorder and other instruments. This workshop is bound to produce musical surprises, and will also lead players to greater heights in recorder technique and style.

Scott Paterson

A popular recorder teacher and music critic in Toronto, Scott has planned a workshop that offers the very best of holiday music as an antidote to "the constant flow of over-familiar carols and candy-coated pop songs". Bring your recorders and viols and experience an intriguing mix of familiar and unfamiliar music.

John Abberger

We are pleased to welcome Tafelmusik oboist John Abberger, making his debut as a TEMPO workshopper. John offers us a fresh approach to baroque music for recorders and viols. With his wide experience of orchestral repertoire, he'll be a great coach for ensemble playing as well as an expert on stylistic matters.

Femke Bergsma,

A professional recorder player and teacher in Montreal, Femke is also an expert recorder maker. At this workshop she will combine our usual music playing with practical advice about recorder care and repair. She also plans to be available on the weekend so people can bring their needy instruments for her to work on. Donšt miss this unique opportunity!

Sophie Lariviere

Sophie is well-known as a superb recorder teacher, especially to those who attend early music week at CAMMAC in Quebec. She is an active professional recorder player, and is the partner - in life and in music - of Matthias Maute, with whom she has made several distinctive recordings. Be prepared for an exciting workshop!

Annual Spring Workshop

Lucie Laneville

Our Annual Spring Workshop will be led this year by a favourite TEMPO leader from Ottawa, Lucie Laneville. Calling her program "From Henry VIII to Henry Purcell," Lucie will present the unique and highly varied music of the British Isles - ideal for recorders and viols. She will put pieces and composers in context, focusing on Dunstable, Cornish, Byrd, Lupo, Gibbons and Purcell. Special attention will be paid to phrasing, articulation and ornamentation.

Shannon and Michael Purves-Smith

Shannon's workshop will be of special interest to viol players, but all our recorder folks are needed, too! Shannon plans to coach the viol players in a separate room for half the workshop while Michael Purves-Smith takes the recorders. The two groups will meet after the break for a grand double-choir finale.

Note: TEMPO's Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the coffee break today.

Larry Beckwith

Larry is a multi-talented musician on the Toronto scene - sings tenor, plays violin and more. His latest venture is Artistic Director of the Toronto Masque Theatre, whose first full season opens in September. His TEMPO workshop will be inspired to some of this delightful repertoire, such as Purcell's The Fairy Queen.
