...The program justified itself with...the premiere of a ravishing Canadian work, Christos Hatzis' Confessional for cello and orchestra, featuring cellist Shauna Rolston. The piece represents a series of evolutions in faith and is profoundly beautiful, sensuous and full of contrast, with a radiant (and difficult) part for the cello. Rolston, as precise as she was fearless, was amazing, and so was the orchestra in a role that shimmers with exotic colours. April 26. Broadcast of Fertility Rites, (Beverley Johnston, marimba), Hunter's Dream, Footprints in New Snow, Nunavut (Annalee Patipatanakoon, Carol Fujino, violins; Douglas Perry, viola; David Hetherington, violoncello); NPS Radio, Holland. This will be the first complete broadcast of Hatzis' latest compact disc Footprints in New Snow which has not been commercially relased yet.

May 22, 8:00 PM. World premiere performance of Zeitgeist; The Camerata Orchestra; Alexander Myrat, conductor. The Athens Concert Hall [Megaron Mousikis], Athens, Greece. Christos will be in Athens to attend the performance and will give a public lecture on his recent music before the concert.
May 22, 8:00 PM. World premiere performance of Zeitgeist; The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony; Noel Edison, conductor. Centre in the Square, Kitchener, Canada. Part of the Open Ears Festival 1999.
October 18 -21. Four performances of Fertility Rites; Beverley Johnston, marimba; Music in the Morning, Vancouver, BC.
November 6. Fertility Rites; Beverley Johnston, marimba; International Percussion Event, Paris, France. The work was subsequently performed in a percussion master class by Beverley Johnston in Geneva, Switzerland.
December 31, 11:00 PM. World premiere of Hatzis' Viderunt Omnes, part of "The
Millennium Project", an one hour radio special presented by the European
Broadcasting Union will air at the same time by the national networks of
each member country (EBU members include networks in North America, Australia
and Asia.) The program will herald the new millennium and celebrate Western
Music, from the advent of polyphony to the present. Each member country
has been requested to provide a five minute original composition based
on the Perotin's organum "Viderunt Omnes" from Matinus Lieber.
Hatzis has been commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)
to compose the Canadian entry for this event.
