Ashwini Tambe's research focuses on colonial South Asia, transnational gender and sexuality studies, and global political economy. Her upcoming book, "Codes of Misconduct: The Regulation of Prostitution in Colonial Bombay" (2009 U Minnesota Press) traces the history of the transnational sex trade in Bombay city. It focuses on the relationship between forms of prostitution, discourses of law making and law enforcement practices. She has co-edited a volume on transnational approaches to subaltern mobility in the Indian Ocean, titled "The Limits of British Colonial Control in South Asia: Spaces of Disorder in the Indian Ocean" (Routledge, 2008). Her articles have appeared in journals such as Feminist Studies, Gender and Society, and the International Feminist Journal of Politics. Her current research focuses on the changing legal age standards defining girlhood in twentieth century India.
