Canadian statistics on special topics
|
Facts or figures are often used in studies or reports to make a point. These values, which are often
referred to as statistics, tend to be aggregate counts, totals, sums, or averages. In the print world,
this type of numerical information is typically found in statistical abstracts, census monographs, and
serial publications from Statistics Canada or other government agencies, such as the Bank of Canada.
In the digital world this numeric information appears on CD-ROM and similar products with electronic
table access, or in electronic journals. (Source: Chuck Humphrey, University of Alberta, 1997)
This document deals with the location of statistics (as opposed to raw primary data), primarily in computer-readable
form, with an emphasis on national statistics. In some cases, references are to collections of statistics themselves;
in other cases, references are to tools
that assist you to locate statistics in print or in electronic publications. Since excellent directory sites already
exist which provide access to U.S. statistics, and to international statistics, this document concentrates on
the location of Canadian statistics.
In Canada, Statistics Canada is the major collector of socio-economic data and producer of socio-economic statistics.
Thus there is an emphasis on Statistics Canada's products in this document. For a general introduction to
Statistics Canada, and how data are organized, classified, and released, see
<http://prod.library.utoronto.ca:8090/datalib/codebooks/cstdli/ico/aboute2.pdf>
Much restricted data from Statistics Canada is available via
Depository Libraries under the Depository Services Program (DSP) through Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC).
Prospective users who are not University of Toronto faculty, students, or staff, should contact their
nearest Depository Library.
Additional restricted data from Statistics Canada is available to
Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) member institutions through their
local contact.
Prospective users with no DLI member institution affiliation should contact their
local data library or data service or nearest
Statistics Canada office.
Locations and access conditions, where restricted, in this document relate specifically to the University of Toronto.
In the interests of brevity, for Canadian sites which contain both English and French language resources,
only English language sources are given here; most Canadian federal government Internet sites and some
provincial sites include links to parallel French-language resources.
