Displaying International Characters with Netscape under Windows
Ensure that the following information is installed on your own home computer, not on CHASS lab computers unless permission is obtained.
Cyrillic characters
This information describes how to display Cyrillic characters with Netscape
3.xx and Netscape 4.xx under Windows 95/NT4.0. Each Netscape version has a
special subsection.
Please refer to the according section. If you use a different Netscape
version or Windows 3.1/3.11 please refer to the very helpful Web site
written by Paul Gorodyansky. You will find this page at
http://www.siber.com/sib/russify/ms-windows/netscape.html.
Netscape 3.xx
To display Cyrillic characters with Netscape 3.xx you have to install four
Cyrillic True Type Windows fonts to be able to work with most types
of Cyrillic Web pages. The fonts are
- "ER Bukinist KIO8 Normal" - proportional font for KOI8-R encoding
- "ROL:KIO8-Courier" - fixed font for KOI8-R encoding
- "ER Bukinist 1251" - proportional font for CP-1251(win) encoding
- "ER Kurier 1251" - fixed font for KOI8-R encoding
Download the ForWWW.zip file and save it into a directory, for example
"C:\NEWFONT". Extract the file "ForWWW.zip" with WinZip or pkunzip into the same
directory. You can now install the fonts:
Installing fonts
- Click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL
- Click on FONTS icon
- In the FILE menu select INSTALL NEW FONTS
- Select folder where you have all the unpacked font files, for example
"C:\NEWFONT". There is a button on the right SELECT ALL. Click on it
- Click the OK button
Now you have installed these Russian fonts and you can use them in any
Windows application that allows font selection. However, you have to
select these fonts in Netscape 3.xx.
Font Selection
- Start Netscape 3.xx
- Go to OPTIONS / PREFERENCES / FONTS
- Set "For the Encoding" to "Cyrillic (KOI8-R)" and choose as the
proportional font "ER Bukinist KIO8" and as the fixed font
"ROL:KIO8-Courier".
- Click "OK".
- Set "For the Encoding" to "CP-1251(win)" and choose as the
proportional font "ER Bukinist 1251" and as the fixed font
"ER Kurier 1251".
- Click "OK".
You should now be able to read Cyrillic
Web Sites with your Netscape 3.xx. However, some web pages do not
specify which encoding they use. If you still see funny characters on your
screen, go to the OPTIONS / DOCUMENT ENCODING and select CP-1251 and KOI8-R, one after
another, until you see the normal Russian text. It may be necessary
to click the reload button.
Netscape 4.xx
In order to see Cyrillic characters
with Netscpape 4.xx you need to install Russian CP-1251(win) fonts which
are part of your Windows 95 Multilinguage Support system. Note, with Netscape
4.xx you do not need any K0I8-R fonts.
- First check out if these fonts are already installed. Open the WORD PAD editor
and go to the font list. If you see fonts named "Arial Cyr" or "Courier New Cyr",
the Multilanguage Support is already installed. Skip step 2. If you do not
find them, you have to install the Multilanguage Support from your Windows 95 CD.
Follow the instructions below.
- Installing MS Multilanguage Support:
Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL. Double-klick "Add/Remove Programs"
and then select the "Windows Setup" tab. Make sure that you have checked
"Multilinguage Support" from the component list. Click OK. You will
be asked to insert the Windows 95 CD-Rom. After finishing the installation,
reboot your Computer.
- Start Netscape Communicator. Go to EDIT
/ PREFERENCES / APPEARANCE/ FONT.
In the small window with the title "For
the Encoding", where you see "Western", select encoding "Cyrillic".
Select the following fonts:
VARIABLE WIDTH FONT:
"Arial Cyr"
FIXED WIDTH FONT:
"Courier New Cyr"
Now, click the OK button.
You should now be able to read Cyrillic
Web Sites with your Netscape Communicator. However, some web pages do not
specify which encoding they use. If you still see funny characters on your
screen, go to the View / Encoding and select CP-1251 and KOI8-R, one after
another, until you see the normal Russian text. It may be necessary
to click the reload button.
Chinese, Japanese and Korean
If you don't have a Chinese Windows version, we recommend using NJWIN Internet
Viewer to display Chinese, Japanese and Korean text with your Internet Browser and your
email application. NJWIN CJK Internet Viewer is a shareware program and can be downloaded from the NJSTAR-homepage. Please refer to the NJSTAR-homepage for further information.
Arabic Web Sites
If you don't have Windows 95 Arabic you can use the Sindbad Netscape plug-in available from Sakhr Software. However, Microsoft Windows 95 in the OSR-2 version is not supported yet.
